Åsa Brandberg posted a note on the openmoney ning site about her idea for a solidarity based economy, to be brought about by a money system that puts individuals as the only entry point of money into the economy.

The nature congruent currency I propose is called Solidar. It is electronic, local, speculation-proof and complementary. It is not bound to any other currency. It also Is approved by the Swedish Finance Inspection.
A new Solidar is nothing but an electronic figure, issued free of charge every midnight as potential money on Base Accounts for daily Base Income to the users and their commons. One-way locks on Base Accounts prevent deposits there.
The Solidar is activated when used as payment on so called Trade Accounts for transactions. There all sums are gradually reduced at the same rate as the daily inflow of Base Income on the Base Accounts, from there it is equally distributed each night to the users and the Public Sector. It means that a Solidar user will get new Base Income every midnight. The Base Account could be used for bying, but no deposits could be done from there, as it is electronically locked.
The Public Sector gets Trade Accounts for societal needs and protection, and Base Accounts for paying salaries and equipments for common use.
The vanishing Solidars on the Trade Accounts are currently re-issued as new Base Income, equally distributed every midnight on the Base Accounts of the users and their commons according to votes among them. Together it makes a continuous circulation of ever-new money on a free market of goods and services.
So this would be a system where demurrage (constant vanishing of Solidars) is used as the counter-part of continuous currency re-issue, always keeping the purchasing power with the people who live in the area served by Solidars.
I could imagine such a system to spread first as a p2p idea and project, and subsequently being embraced by whole regions or countries.

We DO need a new currency, but this is another “fiat” currency that doesn’t represent ANYTHING that people actually value, and so will mask a transfer of wealth from one group to others.
What we need are commodities-based (gold, platinum etc) certificates of deposit that can be electronically traded AND physically redeemed. To deal with existing “legal tender” laws, by which govt enforces its monopoly, users must agree that any obligations denominated in the new currency can also be paid in $$ at a rate equivalent to the $$/new currency rate, at the time of payment.
