Not as a critique, but more as an addition, I think discussions on the commons need to provide a place and a process for disagreement and conflict. My guess is that if we were to take disagreement and conflict seriously, we would find a place for political deliberation, which, for the most part, seems to be missing now.

My vision of the commons and property, individuality, etc. is not as “pure” as Mattei’s. It is more diverse and mixed.

I both agree and disagree with Michel’s point that a phase change does not come about by tinkering. I think a phase change comes through the cumulative convergence of many causes, some visible but many obscure. I think precipitating a phase change is beyond our grasp. It happens on its own schedule. But I think our tinkering and nudging, conscious and unconscious, is part of the build-up.

My guess is that a phase change in the US is not likely in my lifetime. It may be just as likely that the US will suffer a darker period before the dawn. My sense is that the powers that be have a scorched earth revenge agenda for the US. They would like to punish the uppity US liberal class by destroying our civil society and leaving us a third world economy. I fully expect a crushing corporate counter-revolution against democracy here–the “attack without mercy”.

So I tinker today as if there were no tomorrow.
