How do people work together to design open-source hardware products? What is the level of openness, trust and collaboration within such projects? Do the communities share common goals and visions and how do they allocate workloads? These are some core questions related to demystifying open-source hardware projects that Robert Mies and Jérémy Bonvoisin try to answer in the research project entitled “OPEN! Methods and tools for community-based product development“.

As for the digital sphere, there is strong evidence that commons-based peer-to-peer dynamics harness social creativity, collaboration and information sharing in a regenerative way. The question is: can we also unleash the creative capabilities of P2P in the physical sphere?

Experimentation is in the vanguard of open-source hardware projects. Equally important is reflection, with the aim to understand the dynamics and patterns that can lead to constant improvement. Therefore, this survey is a useful tool to help us comprehend how the creative capabilities of commons-based peer production could be unleashed: https://opensourcedesign.cc/Limesurvey/index.php/561438

Please share the survey and, if you are part of an open-source hardware project, are invited to join by December 17th, 2017!

Bruno Chies is a student from the University of Gothenburg who’s taken an interest in the work of P2PFoundation and is conducting this survey, with the support of Michel Bauwens. The results of this survey will be used (together with other data) in a paper to be presented at a conference, where Bruno discusses the performative role of social and economic theory (in particular that of the P2PFoundation) in creating or shaping new market/commons arrangements and practices.

The point of the survey is to have a better understanding of P2PFoundation’s general public on the internet, as well as of its collaborators. It should give us an idea about the extent to which interviewees are engaged in peer production and their affinity with the ideas advocated by the P2PFoundation. The results will be shared and hopefully the data will be also useful to the p2p community.

You are all welcomed to take this survey!

You are invited to participate in this survey conducted by the research teams from the P2Pvalue project, in which the P2P Foundation is a consortium member.

In the research project P2PValue  we study what we call peer to peer (P2P) communities. With this we mean networks of people who freely collaborate around a common goal, using shared resources. Examples are Wikipedia, Debian and other FLOSS communities as well as Maker Spaces and Community Agriculture. This is not a definition written in stone, but we hope that it will give you an idea of what sort of activities we are interested in.

In this survey we want to ask you about your experience of working with P2P communities. Please take time to answer these questions and help us conclude our research. At the end of the survey you can give us a contact address, and we will update you on where you can find our research results.

Click here to take the survey now. The survey was created with eSurveysPro.com survey software.
