Even more jealously guarded than data of course, is meta-data, or the machine readability of data. Also note that data counterintelligence measures such as screen scraping do not seem to figure prominently in the public domain software; instead being the stuff of “freelancing” at third-world rates. Hopefully machine readability will at some point enter into our understanding of what it means for information to be in “the public record.”
