What is Peer to Peer Spirituality, the Global Spiritual Commons, and the Metaphysics of Technology?

A One Night Cutting-Edge Presentation by the Belgian Integral Philosopher and Peer to Peer Innovator, Michel Bauwens

Text of Invitation:

“If you are into the future of spirituality and/or technology, you will not want to miss this special evening March 8 th at 7 pm. In this lecture/presentation which includes excerpts of the documentary movie TechnoCalyps, Michel Bauwens, a Belgian integral philosopher now living in the mountains of northern Thailand, will bring together two lines of inquiry. The first is how the new peer to peer dynamics that are more and more present in our society, are affecting the ways we conceive of the spiritual search and practice, pointing to more participatory and relational points of view that lead to the co-creation of a global spiritual commons.

This ‘spiritual trans-humanism’ will also be contrasted with an increasing tendency towards technological trans-humanism, i.e. the widespread and well-funded efforts to obtain transcendence of human limits through technology. How can we marry traditional prescriptive spiritual paths, contemporary participatory spirituality, and the lure (or nightmare) of the promise of technology? Is there a form of integration that will enable to construct a more human and spiritual form of society?”

Summary of Infrastructure, Communities and Corporations: is There a Middle Way Between Open and Closed?:

“A market exists when there is a tension between supply and demand, and, in the world of immaterial communication and non-rival goods, requires partial enclosures and artificial scarcities. A digital commons creates abundant and freely available social value but is difficult to ‘monetize’ Or in other words: openness creates value but enclosure captures it. This is the key contradiction both for our digital communication infrastructure and for the content being produced on and through it. We have to ask ourselves: to which degree are the interests of peer producing and sharing communities both similar but also divergent with the owners of the infrastructures and the propietary platforms. If we value openness and freedom, what should and could be done, particularly about those that attempt limiting and enclosing them? Can we find a way of the middle that satisfies both communities and corporations? And is there a role for public authorities? Does it make sense for communities to strive for the ‘distribution of everything’ so that peer to peer dynamics can become more widespread?”
