Both peer production and cooperatives are based on a ethic of sharing and want to create a better society; they are also both implicated, at present, in the market society; both can move the market society towards more humane and democratic relationships. I have always been wondering if peer production projects, when they are taken up by commercial firms or the market, could not usefully resort to cooperative mechanisms …

In my vision of a future commons-based society, I see the core as constituted by pure non-reciprocal peer production, surrounded by gift economy practices, and a market exchange reformed and in-formed by participatory practices, such as the cooperatives.

First, we must consider that colaboration changes according to the evolution of the society and perhaps co-operative companies are mostly based in human face-to-face relations. But my interest has to do more with what is useful from the dinamycs of P2P in order to redefine some of the values of the co-operative companies nowadays. I think many of them are absolutely apart from p2p movement and to me it’s not logical.
