I have long argued with ecological ecomonists that they cannot force valuations of the various commons into property regimes , as they attempt. I knew Garrett Hardin whose essay ” the Tragedy of the Commons ” ( Science, 1968) was based too much on neo-classical economics .Now it is challenged by the many examples of how commons have been and are neing managed by cooperation between users and setting rules and standards. If Michael Hardt would like a copy of the book on all this use of global commons which I co-edited with Harlan Cleveland and Inge Kaul, titled THE UN:POLICY AND FINANCING ALTERNATIVES ( Elsevier Scientific,UK 1995) I will be happy to send him one.
