Did you hear of our project?
The Biggest Crocheted Blanket in the World.
What is the intention?
In 2018 – when Leeuwarden will be the cultural capital of Europe – we, as the Netherlands – would like to show the world what “Iepen Mienskip” – “Open Society” (the theme of that year) means by creating the biggest crocheted blanket in the world which demonstrates the power, warmth, diversity, connection and the colourful side of our society.
This biggest blanket will be made out of (as we strive) 10.000 crocheted single blankets (140cm x 200cm) which will be joined together at the corners. After the challenge the blankets will be donated to Good Causes who will distribute the blankets directly to people and organizations who need them. In this way the “red thread” of the ball of wool with which you start, reaches the person who receives the blanket.
Why is it so important?
In the speed of economic prosperity we have forgotten to include togetherness. Right now as individual citizens we discover how important, useful and precious a social network is in transforming back into a participation society. But how did we use to do that? How do you maintain such a network and how can you make use of it? By joining this initiative and crocheting together you share your time and knowledge, you get to know each other in such a way that, if needed, you can ask each other for help and/or offer support.
How can people join?
You can participate in three ways:
1. Firstly you can crochet one or more granny squares seize 10x10cm and post them to or drop them off at the delivery points. For addresses check the facebook page of “Haak je aan? Haken is verbinden” and “De Grootste Gehaakte Deken van de Wereld”. These addresses are for instance care homes where crochet groups are formed who create a blanket of 140×200 cm out of those granny squares.
2. Secondly you can also crochet a blanket with a group, your neighbours, friends, sport club, choir, garden club or colleagues. Material, colour and pattern are free of choice as long as the measurements of the blanket are 140x200cm. You can drop off those blankets also at the service points.
3. Finally if you cannot or do not want to crochet, you can contribute to this project by using your talent or network. We are looking for people who can help us with communication, logistics etc. etc.
Everybody can join, everybody is of great value!
Check out the various websites like the facebook pages “Haak je aan? Haken is verbinden” and “De Grootste Gehaakte Deken van de Wereld” for information, events and photos of finished blankets.
• On facebookpage @samenhaken (alias for “Haak je aan? Haken is verbinden” ) all information, events and things to know are stated.
• On facebookpage@GGDW2018 (alias for “De Grootste Gehaakte Deken van de Wereld”) the pictures of the finished blankets are posted. So far 761 blankets.
