A lot of academic scientists only work on stuff that is paid for. This has been going on for years. I had friends who explained how this works (thus ridding me of some idealism) 40-50 years ago. One wanted to work on an electronic microscope, and the only way he could get to do that was to study the hindgut of the tobacco hornworm.

So academic science is not always, or maybe not even very often, a moral counterpart.
