Douglas slightly misunderstands me though, as I did not mean to imply that there would be any central servers at all. I believe that these negotiations will all be handled “peer to peer” in real-time as part of the emerging “ethical economy” (see Adam Arvidsson’s http://www.ethicaleconomy.com/ )

Some systems will work with cell phones and PDAs but that did not take off so much as local merchants were not quick to accept digital (Internet) currency. However, it seems in Africa where more people have cells than bank accounts, local payments such as M-Pesa are HUGE success stories.

The Loom.cc system is fantastic and now has a iPhone interface from Bill st. clair.
