“Miku isn’t just a pop star; she’s a bold improvement on the way we engage with intellectual property. She’s what Justin Bieber, Mickey Mouse and other western icons aren’t and can’t be: available to the public.”

This is fascinating! I have to admit… when I first heard about the Miku phenomena I found it disturbing… a fear of a new onslaught of artificial “heroes” to work for other artificial people (i.e. corporations)… but this does give it a different spin.
I’ve never been a fan of ‘fandom’ generally or its encouragement (which is the business of the whole ‘celebrity industry’)… but if its not going away… and kids seem to want their superstars… well at least this can make them a creative part of the process.
