We are in the midst of a period of change equivalent in scale to the Industrial Revolution. This shift, driven by developments in Information and Communications Technology, changing social values and global business competition, is forcing organisations to review and modify their structure, from a bureaucratic hierarchy to some form of network, matrix or partnership. Despite this, academics continue to search for ways to theorise this shift and practitioners continually seek better and more effective ways of structuring organisations. The primary tensions remain ones of empowerment versus control, individualism versus collectivism, cynicism versus engagement.

* How can organisations continue to engage and motivate employees to pull together in the pursuit of common goals?

* What is the link between organisational form and the ‘soft’ side of organisation?

* How is leadership and leadership development adapting to, or leading these changes?

This conference, the second in a series of events sponsored by the Economic and Social Science Research Council, aims to draw together academic and practitioner perspectives on organisation and leadership development to explore these challenges.

The event has been organised by Lancaster University Management School and the Centre for Leadership Studies at the University of Exeter in conjunction with the Work Foundation. Due to the ESRC sponsorship, this event is priced at a nominal fee of £30 per person (including buffet lunch and refreshments). Entrance is by ticket only, spaces are limited and demand is likely to be very high. Tickets will be issued strictly on a first come, first served basis.
