We live in a time when markets fail and traditional political institutions are incapable of solving pressing issues of social and ecological transformation.
This is where the international Commons movement comes in. Renowned pioneers of this movement call for a paradigm shift to overcome the limitations of state and market.
Commons, self-organized collaborative systems for the management of resources, natural, urban, knowledge and information, can provide fairer, more democratic, and ecologically responsible alternatives for our lives.
Noted Italian legal scholar Stefano Rodotà of the University of Rome who ran in the recent presidential elections discusses the interfaces of Commons, human rights and democracy. He considers the Commons as the basis of a sustainable / alternative legal framework, locally and nationally.
Maristella Svampa, a leading Argentine sociologist having researched the devastating effects of extractive industries in Latin America, will explain her vision for economic and human development beyond market fundamentalism and (neo-) Extractivism.
Silke Helfrich and David Bollier of the Commons Strategies Group, an initiative to strengthen discourse on the Commons, will talk about the growing public interest in the Commons, and describe the challenges of the Commons movement at the center of this new mode of production and organization.
