Some day people will smile of the importance and anxiety people of today attach to GDP.

In-between, GDP can grow without a foreseeable limit in a non-aggressive environmental way if its growth is confined to services rather the production of more stuff. Two important lines are energy usage reduction and materials recycling. (There is an implicit assumption here of well managed state monetary and fiscal policies.)

The P2P paradigm has a huge potential for this. It can simultaneously grow the commons and grow services in open businesses ways. Therefore, it can lay down the support for social evolution by simultaneously establishing novel production relations and reducing actual pain of unemployment. In doing this it will minimize the risks of a social regression.

The question of GDP growth is better placed IMO at the root level of GDP real importance.
