Robots on assembly lines, more efficient software, better commercial set-ups, better connectivity all conspire to give us more abundance … of free time.

So much so, that many of us find themselves “out of work” meaning they lose their job. We don’t like this particular kind of abundance, because traditionally, having a job has been the only way of acquiring the financial means of survival.

Let’s think about how we can start enjoying the abundance of free time. To do so, we need to figure out how to replace the compulsory “having to have a job” and the “full employment” meme with something that allows us to survive, while enjoying our free time.

Lest you think I have gone completely around the bend, consider this scenario impassionately. Every improvement in technology works to diminish the need for human “employment”. Diminishing the need for having a job, improvements in productive processes work against employment of humans. This is becoming a problem for many of us. It need not be however. All we need is to let go of the “compulsory employment” meme by providing a basic income to everyone. The moment we do so, employment will be freed up to be a voluntary activity, with much improved outcomes in terms of efficiency and dedication. Think about it.

Instituting a basic income guarantee

we’d finally be able to enjoy the abundance of free time!
