Yeah, von Hippel’s work was very important in developing my ideas (for which I credit him in the book). There are some considerable distinctions between the concept of crowdsourcing and user innovation, however, in that there’s no implication in the former that the people in the crowd are users, per se. But the same general dynamic (taking a more collaborative approach to value creation-slash-making stuff) is at work.
