“Elephant’s Dream is a computer animated movie, soon to be released on DVD format under a Creative Commons license with all source code included. You can pre-order here. The work comes out of Orange, an animation studio established in Amsterdam by a group of artists and developers from around the world, united by their interest in applying open concepts to creative works. It was produced using Blender, open source software for 3D modeling, animation, rendering, post-production, interactive creation and playback. Blender is available for all major operating systems under the GNU General Public License.

A particularly interesting feature of Elephant’s Dream is its funding model, which combines the street performer protocol (SPP) with traditional patronage. As their website states, ‘One of the largest financial contributions … will be the pre-sale of the “Extended DVD Versionâ€?, which will not only include the full movie, but also a documentary and all production files as used during the project.’ “
